Meet David
David Kohn is a registered patent attorney and one of the founding partners of Lewis Kohn & Walker LLP. David co-founded Lewis Kohn & Walker LLP in 2009. Prior to this, David worked for several years as an associate attorney with a boutique intellectual property firm based in San Diego, as well as in-house at The Scripps Research Institute within the Office of Patent Counsel. He has experience advising corporate and academic institutions with regard to intellectual property and licensing strategies, as well as prosecuting the extensive patent and trademark portfolios of various organizations. Primarily handling patent prosecution and regulatory strategies, including licensing negotiations, clearance/freedom-to-operate opinion drafting, directing diligence projects for mergers/acquisitions, and advising biotech and medical device companies with respect to early stage regulatory issues, including NDA and 510(k) filings. David has direct patent prosecution experience across a broad range of technologies, including: autoimmune therapies, cancer therapies, retinal devices, protein therapeutics, recombinant DNA therapeutics, stem cell therapeutics/diagnostics, photon generation devices, pump/valve systems, and emulsion-based formulations.
David first began his career in science working for Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. For more than six years at Neurocrine, David was part of the Pharmacology Department responsible for identifying novel small molecules at a variety of receptors on cell surfaces. After Neurocrine, while pursuing graduate studies at the University of California, San Diego, he became familiar with a variety of academic laboratory environments, conducting research ranging from studies involving laser ablations of C. elegans neurons to measuring the effects of calcium transients in the developing Xenopus embryo.
David worked as a registered patent agent within the Office of Patent Counsel at The Scripps Research Institute and clerked for the Honorable Jeffrey T. Miller in the United States District Court, Southern District of California.
David earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of California at Riverside and holds a Juris Doctor from California Western School of Law. While a student at California Western, he was a member of the Student Intellectual Property Law Association.
